JFK Terminals in 2026: Which Airline Flies from Where, and What Is Changing

JFK in 2026 is in the middle of a $19 billion rebuild, and the terminal map changes by the season. Two new terminals are coming online, one old one is closing, and more than 30 airlines are moving between buildings. For a hotel guest the practical questions are which terminal to give the shuttle driver, how long to allow to reach it, and whether the lounge you have access to is in the building you fly from. This page gives the state of play as of September 2026, checked against the Port Authority’s redevelopment pages; the terminal on your boarding pass on the day is the final word.

Terminal 4

The largest and busiest terminal, home to Delta (domestic and international) and most of the long-haul carriers not assigned elsewhere. It has the deepest lounge bench at the airport, with the Delta Sky Club and Delta One Lounge, the Centurion Lounge, the Chase Sapphire Lounge, the Capital One Lounge (open 24 hours), the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse and Minute Suites, and its public areas stay open around the clock. Terminal 4 has been expanded and modernised in phases rather than replaced. The AirTrain stop is inside the building.

Terminal 5

JetBlue’s home, connected to the TWA Hotel by the flight tubes and to the new Terminal 6 next door. JetBlue’s BlueHouse lounge opened here in December 2025 with day passes from $59; there is no Priority Pass lounge in the terminal. Terminal 5 also hosts a few partner airlines, and since 2026 some JetBlue flights have moved to Terminal 6 gates, so check the gate as well as the terminal. The TWA Hotel is a walk from arrivals.

Terminal 6

The first phase of the new Terminal 6, built by JFK Millennium Partners on the site of the old Terminals 6 and 7, opened in the first half of 2026 with its first gates, an arrivals and departures hall and a single security checkpoint. JetBlue flew the first flights; Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Air Canada, ANA, Cathay Pacific, Avianca, TAP, Norse Atlantic, Icelandair, Kuwait Airways, Condor and Frontier have committed to it and move across in phases through late 2026 and 2027 as Terminal 7 empties. When complete in 2028 it will have 10 gates, nine of them for widebodies, and 1.2 million square feet. It connects to Terminal 5, which puts the TWA Hotel a short walk away.

Terminal 7

The old British Airways terminal, now in its final years: BA moved to Terminal 8 in 2022, and the remaining carriers transfer to Terminal 6 as its gates open, after which Terminal 7 closes and is demolished to make room for the rest of Terminal 6. If your airline is still listed at Terminal 7, expect an older building with limited food and lounge choice, and confirm the terminal the week you fly.

Terminal 8

American Airlines’ hub and the oneworld terminal, with British Airways, Iberia, Japan Airlines and Qatar Airways (until its New Terminal One move) among the tenants. Its expansion added the Chelsea, Soho and Greenwich lounges alongside the Admirals Club, and Minute Suites offer hourly rooms airside. A commercial overhaul is adding some 60 new shops and restaurants through 2026. The AirTrain stop is at the terminal’s western end.

Terminal 1 and the New Terminal One

The existing Terminal 1 still handles Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa (until its Terminal 6 move) and other international carriers, with Priority Pass access to several airline lounges. It is being replaced by the New Terminal One, a 2.6 million square foot, 23-gate international terminal rising on the combined sites of Terminals 1, 2 and 3. The first phase was scheduled for June 2026 and has been delayed by electrical and mechanical work; the developer’s latest guidance points to late 2026 at the earliest, with completion in 2030. More than 20 airlines have signed for it, including Air France, KLM, Etihad, Korean Air, Turkish Airlines, EVA Air, LOT, SAS, Air China, China Airlines, China Eastern, Philippine Airlines, Air New Zealand, Royal Air Maroc, Saudia, EgyptAir, Qatar Airways, Gulf Air and Air Europa. Until each airline’s move date, it stays where it is today.

Moving between terminals

There is no airside connection between JFK’s terminals: a transfer means leaving the secure area, riding the AirTrain (free within the airport, every few minutes, under ten minutes end to end) and clearing security again. International arrivals also clear immigration and customs in the arrival terminal before any transfer. Allow at least 90 minutes for a domestic terminal change and three hours for an international one, more during the 2026 construction, when the Port Authority itself recommends public transport over the roads. Tips

Check your terminal on the day in your airline’s app; the boarding pass beats any guide, including this one. Hotel shuttles drop at the departures level of the terminal you name, so get it right before you board the bus. Which terminals are open at JFK in 2026?

Terminals 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8, plus the first gates of the new Terminal 6 beside Terminal 5. Terminal 2 closed in January 2023 and Terminal 3 was demolished in 2013; both sites are part of the New Terminal One construction. Always check the terminal on your airline's app on the day, because airlines are moving between buildings through 2026 and 2027.

When does the New Terminal One open?

The first phase was planned for June 2026 but slipped; at the time of writing the developer was targeting late 2026 at the earliest, with the full 23-gate terminal due in 2030. Until it opens, the airlines assigned to it (Air France, KLM, Etihad, Korean Air, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, LOT, SAS and others) stay in the existing Terminal 1 or Terminal 4.

Can I walk between JFK terminals?

No, and there is no airside connection either. Take the AirTrain, free within the airport and under ten minutes between any two terminals, and expect to clear security again at the other end. Terminal 6 is the exception: it is being built as an extension of Terminal 5 with a connection to JetBlue's terminal.

Which terminal is closest to the TWA Hotel?
