A JFK Layover in Manhattan: How Many Hours You Need, Luggage and What to See
A layover at JFK long enough for Manhattan is one of the better ways to spend a connection, and a layover that only looks long enough is one of the worst. The difference is arithmetic, and this page does it for you, using the 2026 transport times from our JFK to Manhattan guide and the security and immigration realities of a US airport. It then covers luggage, what to see in the hours you have, and the alternative for the layovers that come up short.
The arithmetic
Start with arrival. Every passenger leaving the terminal enters the United States, so an international arrival clears immigration and customs first: 30 minutes on a quiet morning, 90 at a busy evening bank, plus the walk and the AirTrain to Jamaica. Call it two hours from touchdown to the LIRR platform. The train to Penn Station or Grand Central Madison is about 20 minutes, 35 to 45 minutes door to door from the terminal. Coming back, you need to be at the airport three hours before an international departure and two before a domestic one, and the trip out takes the same 35 to 45 minutes. An international-to-international connection therefore burns six hours before you have seen anything: a ten-hour layover gives about three hours in the city, twelve gives five. A domestic connection with cabin bags shaves the immigration time and one hour of the return buffer, so eight hours works. Six hours is a day room, not a city.
Luggage
Checked bags on a single ticket stay with the airline, which is the ideal. If you must reclaim them, note that left-luggage inside the JFK terminals is limited and not available everywhere, and a bag makes the subway and the sights a chore. The practical options are a luggage-storage service in Manhattan near Penn Station or Grand Central, of which there are several charging a few dollars per bag per day, or a Daytripper room at the TWA Hotel, which stores bags for guests and gives you a shower and a bed for the return; our day rooms guide explains the hours and the booking.
What to see in three hours
From Penn Station you are at 34th Street and Seventh Avenue: the Empire State Building is a ten-minute walk east, the High Line starts 15 minutes west at Hudson Yards, and Times Square is 15 minutes north. From Grand Central Madison you come up at 42nd Street with the terminal’s main concourse above you, Bryant Park and the New York Public Library a block west and Fifth Avenue a block further; Rockefeller Center and St Patrick’s Cathedral are ten minutes north. Choose one of the two stations for the whole visit, stay on foot, eat at a counter rather than a table, and start walking back to the station when the clock says half your city time has gone. Save the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge for a trip with a hotel in it.
Timing the return
Build the return around the LIRR timetable, not the clock: trains to Jamaica leave Penn Station and Grand Central Madison every few minutes at peak and every 15 to 30 minutes at other times, and the AirTrain connection at Jamaica adds ten minutes plus the $8.75 tap. Check your terminal on the airline’s app before you leave the city, because the 2026 moves described in our terminals guide have put some airlines in a different building from last year, and the AirTrain stops at all of them. If you are running late, the $70 taxi flat fare applies from Manhattan to JFK as well, but so does the traffic on the Van Wyck, so the train is the safer bet in the afternoon.
When the layover is too short
Under eight hours, spend the time at the airport well. The TWA Hotel sells Daytripper rooms from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm for four to twelve hours, with a rooftop pool and a gym, a free AirTrain ride from any terminal; Minute Suites in Terminals 4 and 8 rent hourly rooms airside; and Terminal 4’s lounges include a 24-hour Capital One Lounge and several that take Priority Pass, listed in our lounges guide. An overnight layover belongs in a bed: the Marriott New York JFK Airport and the other 24-hour shuttle hotels around Federal Circle collect you at any hour.
Tips
Have your ESTA or visa sorted before you fly, since a layover is an entry. Tap in and out of the AirTrain and subway with the same card so the fares are charged correctly. Carry only what you need for the afternoon and leave the rest with the airline or the storage service. And set an alarm for the moment you must be walking back to the station; Manhattan is very good at making three hours feel like one.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long a layover at JFK do I need to visit Manhattan?
Ten hours or more for an international connection: two hours for immigration, customs and the AirTrain on arrival, 35 to 45 minutes into Manhattan, the same back, and three hours at the airport for the onward flight, which leaves about three hours in the city. Eight hours works for a domestic connection with cabin bags only. Six hours is not enough for anyone.
Where can I leave my luggage during a JFK layover?
Left-luggage inside the JFK terminals is limited and not offered at every terminal, so plan on a luggage-storage service in Manhattan near Penn Station or Grand Central, which charge a few dollars per bag per day, or a TWA Hotel Daytripper room, which stores bags for guests. Checked bags on a single ticket stay with the airline.
What can I see in three hours from Penn Station?
Penn Station is under Madison Square Garden at 34th Street: the Empire State Building is a ten-minute walk, the High Line and Hudson Yards 15 minutes, Times Square 15 minutes north. From Grand Central Madison you are at 42nd Street with Bryant Park, the New York Public Library and Fifth Avenue within ten minutes. Pick one district and walk; do not add the subway to a three-hour clock.
Do I need a visa to leave the airport on a layover?
Everyone leaving the terminal enters the United States, so you need whatever your nationality needs to enter: an ESTA for Visa Waiver countries, a visa for others. There is no sterile transit at JFK; even passengers connecting to another international flight clear immigration.
