JFK Hotel Shuttles and the AirTrain: How Federal Circle Works

JFK is different from most airports in one way that matters to every hotel guest: hotel shuttles are not allowed on the terminal roadways. The Port Authority keeps them off the central terminal area to reduce traffic, so no bus will be waiting outside arrivals, and no hotel can promise to drop you at the kerb. Instead, every off-airport hotel picks up and drops off at the Federal Circle AirTrain station, and the AirTrain does the last mile. Once you know the routine it is quick; if you do not, it is the most common way to lose 45 minutes at JFK. What follows is how it works, checked against the Port Authority’s AirTrain page and each hotel’s own site in September 2026.

The AirTrain

The AirTrain is a driverless light rail that loops the terminals and runs out to two ends: Jamaica station (LIRR and the E, J and Z subway lines) and Howard Beach (the A train). Rides between terminals and to Federal Circle, Lefferts Boulevard (long-term parking) and the parking lots are free; you pay $8.75 only when you enter or leave at Jamaica or Howard Beach. It runs 24 hours a day, every 5 to 15 minutes, and no terminal is more than about ten minutes from another. Trains carry luggage carts, strollers, bikes and small pets in carriers, and every station has lifts. From any terminal, board a train marked Jamaica or Howard Beach (both stop at Federal Circle); the All Terminals loop does not.

Federal Circle

Federal Circle is the AirTrain station for the rental-car centre and the hotel shuttles. Follow the signs down from the platform to the hotel-shuttle area, where the buses of every JFK hotel pull in. Have your hotel’s phone number ready: most hotels send a bus only when they know you are there. Three of the Marriott-family hotels use TrackMyShuttle, a web page where you enter your name and party size and watch the bus on a map; the others take a phone call. Rides to the hotel block north of the Belt Parkway take about ten minutes. Going back, the shuttle drops at the departures level of your terminal; give the driver the airline.

Hotels with a 24-hour shuttle

The Marriott New York JFK Airport runs a scheduled bus every 30 minutes around the clock; request the pick-up at TrackMyShuttle.com/2552. The Residence Inn New York JFK Airport next door runs every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour from the hotel, with pick-ups requested at TrackMyShuttle.com/3113. The Courtyard New York JFK Airport takes reservations at trackmyshuttle.com/a/2121/q or on +1 718-848-2121. The Hampton Inn New York-JFK and DoubleTree by Hilton New York JFK Airport both list the shuttle as complimentary, 24/7, call the hotel. Any of the five works for a midnight arrival or a 5:00 am departure.

Hotels with set hours

The Hilton Garden Inn Queens/JFK Airport runs its free shuttle from 5:00 am to 11:00 pm daily. The Fairfield Inn New York JFK Airport runs every hour on the hour from 4:00 am to midnight, and lists a car service at $15 one way for the gap. Outside those windows a taxi or rideshare from the terminals to either hotel is a short metered ride, so a late arrival is still possible, just not free. Book these two for their price and their parking, not for a 2:00 am landing.

The hotel that needs no shuttle

The TWA Hotel is on the airport itself, attached to Terminal 5. From Terminal 5, walk through the flight tubes from the arrivals level; from Terminals 1, 4, 7 and 8, take the AirTrain to the Terminal 5 stop, go up to Level 3, cross to the garage and down to the hotel entrance by the fountain. Tips

Before you land, save the shuttle number or TrackMyShuttle link for your hotel in your phone; Federal Circle has patchy signal and the pick-up area is not the place to start searching. If your flight arrives late at night and you have booked a set-hours shuttle hotel, plan a taxi from the start. Travelling as three or four with luggage, a taxi from the terminal to any hotel in the block costs roughly the same as the time you would spend on the AirTrain and the wait; on your own, the free shuttle wins.
