JFK to Manhattan: AirTrain and LIRR, Subway, Taxi Flat Fare and Rideshare

Getting from JFK to Manhattan is the second decision after the hotel, and the 2026 answer is simpler than it used to be: the AirTrain plus the Long Island Rail Road is fast, cheap and predictable, the yellow cab has a flat fare that keeps surprises to the surcharges, and the subway is the budget route if you are not carrying much. Every hotel on this site is within a short shuttle or taxi ride of the AirTrain, so the options below apply whether you start at the terminal or the hotel. AirTrain and LIRR

Take the AirTrain from any terminal to Jamaica station (about 15 minutes, $8.75 charged as you exit), follow the signs to the LIRR platforms, and board any westbound train: Penn Station in Midtown West or Grand Central Madison on the East Side, both about 20 minutes away, with trains every few minutes at peak and at least every 15 minutes otherwise. Buy a CityTicket, $5.25 off-peak or $7.25 at peak, in the TrainTime app or at the machines; it covers any LIRR trip inside the city. Door to door from the terminal is about 35 minutes, and the trains have luggage racks and level boarding. This is the route to use for Midtown, the East Side and anywhere on the 1, 2, 3 or 4, 5, 6 subway lines from the two stations.

AirTrain and subway

For $11.75 in total, the AirTrain to Jamaica connects to the E train (to Midtown, Penn Station and the World Trade Center) and the J and Z (to Lower Manhattan), and the AirTrain to Howard Beach connects to the A train (to Brooklyn, Lower Manhattan, the West Side and Harlem). The subway fare is $3.00, tapped with the same contactless card or OMNY card you used at the AirTrain gate; 12 taps in seven days and the rest of the week is free. Count on 60 to 75 minutes to Midtown, longer late at night when trains run every 20 minutes, and stairs at most stations. Take it if you have one bag and no deadline.

Taxi

The yellow-cab flat fare between JFK and any address in Manhattan is $70 in either direction, set by the Taxi and Limousine Commission. Add tolls if the driver uses a tolled crossing, the $2.50 state congestion surcharge, a 75-cent congestion-pricing component for trips that begin, end or pass south of 96th Street, a $5 rush-hour surcharge on weekdays between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm, a $1 improvement surcharge and 50 cents for the MTA, plus a tip of 15 to 20 percent; $90 to $120 all in is a fair expectation. Only follow the taxi line at the terminal; do not accept a ride from anyone who approaches you inside. Trips to Brooklyn, Queens or the airports run on the meter, not the flat fare. Journey time is 45 to 75 minutes depending on the Van Wyck Expressway.

Uber and Lyft

Rideshare pick-ups at JFK are from designated zones at each terminal, which the app shows once you request; during terminal construction the zones move, so follow the app’s pin rather than memory. Fares to Manhattan run from about $65 to $85 off-peak and well over $150 with surge, and the same tolls and congestion charges apply. Uber Black and pre-booked car services quote a fixed price and are the calm choice for a family with luggage; for a solo traveller the yellow cab’s flat fare is usually the better deal because it cannot surge.

From the hotels

From the TWA Hotel, the AirTrain to Jamaica is a free ride within the airport, so the fare is the $8.75 exit charge plus the LIRR. From the Federal Circle shuttle hotels, take the hotel bus to the terminal and continue as above, or ask the desk for a taxi; the Marriott New York JFK Airport and its neighbours are 15 to 20 minutes from Jamaica station by taxi on the meter. Hotels list Manhattan as about 15 miles away, which is 45 minutes to an hour by road most of the day.

Tips

Use the same card or phone for every tap so the AirTrain group fare and the subway weekly cap can find your rides. If you land after midnight with luggage, the LIRR still runs but at hourly intervals from Jamaica; the taxi flat fare is the same at 2:00 am as at 2:00 pm and the road is empty, so it is the one time the cab wins on both speed and sense.
